KHS sends six to IHSGWA state finals
For the fourth straight year, KHS is home to a girls’ state wrestling champion. Senior Aulani Davis quickly pinned her opponent in the championship round, winning the 138lb weight class. Davis previously won the 145lb weight class in 2021 and 2022 and the132lb weight class in 2020.
Davis was joined at the state finals by freshmen Amirah Marciniak and Marli Redfern, sophomore Brielle Humphries, junior Alona Smith and senior Fielou Van Bruggen.
Despite being new to the sport, international student Van Bruggen placed 7th in the state. In the Netherlands, Van Bruggen competes in martial arts and has a brown belt in Judo. She hopes that more girls decide to try wrestling in the future.
“Try not to have any expectations because it is so much different than you think,” she said.
Humphries also landed on the podium at the state finals. She placed 4th in the heavyweight division.
