September was first declared National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month in 2008. Since then, the month has been a time to acknowledge those affected by suicide, raise awareness and connect individuals who may have suicidal thoughts to treatment services.
If you’re having trouble with mental health issues, it’s important to reach out for support. Consider talking to a trusted friend, family member or a mental health professional. They can provide guidance, resources and a listening ear. KHS has many people who are available to talk to students who may be struggling. Talk to a teacher, counselor or another trusted adult. They can help get you the information and help you need.
“We have several resources available to students here at KHS. We recommend putting in a request to see your counselor or counseling facilitator, sharing with a trusted adult/teacher/staff member, or if it’s after school hours – texting or calling 988. We can connect you to community resources and our KHS Virtual Calming Room,” said graduation facilitator Amy Roe. “We also have several small group options to help build skills. If a KHS student has a concern about a friend, they can also share their concerns with someone in the Counseling Office, and we can check in while keeping things anonymous.”
Remember, you don’t have to face it alone. Call the National Suicide Prevention Line 800-273-8255 or 988. If you’re at school and feel like you need someone to talk to check in with a trusted adult.
“The KHS Counseling Team would like to remind students that they are not alone, their life matters and that KHS has caring, supportive staff! If you or a friend are struggling, please reach out to get support,” Roe said.
