The KHS dance team recently competed at both the state and national competitions. The jazz dance took 5th overall at state. The hip hop dance also placed 5th overall. They placed 11th at the state competition in Orlando, Florida, competing against over 50 teams.
“Going to nationals was way to get them to bond as a team, and I really saw them make a turn for the better and improve as working as a unit,” said coach Gina Curl. “I thought nationals let them see how talented they could be and what is obtainable.”
All of the team members were really proud to see their hard work pay off. They had practice week after week for several hours, cleaning up their dances to make sure they looked sharp. They were determined to work harder in everything they do.
For Curl, the highlight of the year was the team’s regional championship.
“I love our piece this year. It is so expressive and the dancers really do it well,” she said. “I could not have asked for a better group to have my last year.”
One thing that made the season special for the dancers was the time they got to spend together.
“The highlight of the season has been seeing the team come together,” said junior Dani Gomez.
Sophomore Alayna Kline agreed.
“Any bonding moment with my team was a highlight,” she said.
For some of the dancers, their favorite thing about dancing is the emotion they feel while dancing. Dancing has a way of bringing out emotions that would not be thought of. It is an art form that takes dedication and motivation to be greater.
