For the 22nd year in a row, the KHS Winter Guard qualified to compete at the state finals. This year the team came home with a sixth place finish.
“After 25 years of working with this program, I am still just as excited for our students when they qualify for state finals,” said guard director Deanne Wideman. “This year is the 22nd year in a row our Winter Guard will compete at the IHSCGA state finals.”
This year’s show is performed to the song “The Mind on the Rewind” by Ezio Bosso Clouds. The show is about constant movements, just like clouds. At one competition, Sam Gervaise, a judge from Syracuse, New York, loved the show. He told the group in their competition notes.
“I love intellectually how I can make the connection of just like how clouds can change density and move across the atmosphere, your design has the accumulation and density of groups and then the opportunities to dissipate,” he said.
This season has been filled with ups and downs. In one competition one of the girls came down on her ankle incorrectly and ended up in a boot. The same day another girl pulled back on her parallel rifle release, and the rifle came down and knocked her tooth out. Despite these incidents, both girls decided to perform that night.
“That competition we had “boot girl” and “snaggletooth” on the floor competing, and they killed it!” Wideman said.
