Senior Andrew Guerre is just like most teenage boys; he finds a passion in playing video games, specifically those centered around sports.
While many people play video games for personal hobbies or entertainment, Guerre is taking his passion to the next level and will play Esports in college. Guerre will attend Manchester University to play both tennis and Esports.
“I am super excited to play Esports in college,” Guerre said. “I think it will be super fun to be surrounded by a lot of like-minded teammates that I know are going to my limits, and make me into the best version.”
Guerre will play the well-known game Super Smash Bros. while in college. He has been playing this game for an extended period of time now, and has grown very accustomed to it.
“Ever since I was little I have always loved video games and was super competitive,” he said. “Growing up I did not know that collegiate Esports was even an option until I first started high school. At the end of my 8th-grade year, I started playing Super Smash Bros. competitively”
Until now, Guerre has only been playing Super Smash Bros. competitively alongside nine other teammates as a club. In that time period he won the Esports NIEC Invitational in his junior year of high school. However in college it will officially become a competitive sport. Guerre is excited to move forward with this chapter of his life, and hopes that he can inspire others to consider Esports as a pathway.
“Esports at Kokomo is a club, but some colleges around the United States consider it to be a NCAA sport. I am the first student at Kokomo High School to receive a scholarship for Esports, and I hope I set a foundation for future students at KHS to follow in my footsteps.”
