As the winter weather starts to melt away, the KHS boys’ golf team is teeing up for a new season. Head coach Matt York is hoping to see improvement from his team throughout the spring.

“The goals are to just continue to get better each day,” he said. “I don’t have any personal goals regarding wins and losses, but just want kids to learn the rules and etiquette of golf and have fun doing it.”

New to the team this year is international student Damian Kunz. Kunz played golf in Switzerland, but is enjoying the new challenges of playing high school golf.

“Being from another country, I am excited to see the different courses we’re about to play on and compare them to the courses back home in Switzerland,” Kunz said. “So far, I can say they’re less hilly then what I’m used to. I’m also excited to take home good memories from the team and the time I got to share with them.”

Even though Kunz is just trying to enjoy his new experiences, he does have some goals he’s hoping to achieve.

“I’d like to break 40 for nine holes and vice versa 80 for eighteen holes. I’d also like to step up as our number one golfer this year. This goal is competitive, which brings me to my next goal,” he said. “I want our team to be competitive and push each other. Personally, I’d like to compete without comparing. Comparing is causing eagerness and jealousy which have no business on a golf course.”

With only two golfers who have any varsity experience, York has had to spend more time teaching the rules and etiquette of the game. The team may be young, but he is eager to tap into their potential.

“I’m just thankful that I have 15 kids that want to give golf a try, and blessed to have one of the best golfers in town, Sean Verlee, as my assistant coach,” York said. “It’s my goal to provide kids an opportunity to learn to enjoy this great game of golf, but more importantly become great men of great integrity.”

The KHS golf team travels to Taylor High School tonight for a 4pm match.
