The Kokomo Leadership Academy, KLA, is an organization that works with the freshmen each year in order to help them acclimate to high school. One way they do that is by hosting freshmen orientation each year.
KLA members and their sponsors begin planning the orientation in March. They meet during the summer to make sure they have everything ready.
“It’s important to me to help students learn about themselves, their talents and to help provide them with opportunities to grow and connect with others,” said group sponsor Amy Roe.
But the relationships KLA members have with the freshmen don’t stop when orientation ends. KLA also hosts a Freshmen Lunch Connection the third Friday of every month in the Media Center. During the Lunch Connection, freshmen have the opportunity to meet with older students and talk about their school experiences.
“KLA gives the freshman someone they can go to if they’re ever struggling with anything or if they need advice or if they just want to talk to someone,” said club sponsor Jason Spear. “It helps the seniors by providing them an opportunity to learn more about themselves and find out more about their interests or anything they might want to pursue after graduation.”
For many of the KLA members, being involved is a chance to give back and help others.
“I became a member of KLA because I wanted to show leadership within the school but also influence others in a positive manner,” said senior Regan McClain.
