Anyone walking through the Kokomo Area Career Center during the day is bound to witness some interesting things. With classes from Culinary Arts and Cosmetology to Vet Sciences and Medical Assisting the career center is bound to have a program that fits the career interests of students.
One of the newer programs the KACC offers is Exercise Science. According to Makenna Mikesell, the program’s instructor, the goal of the Exercise Science program is
to provide students with the opportunity to learn a well-rounded education about the body, how it works and how it responds to stimuli. Students also have the opportunity to learn about the diverse career opportunities within the Exercise Science umbrella.
After finishing the Exercise Science pathway, students can choose to major in Exercise Science in college and continue into any medical profession. Exercise science can prepare students for many career paths like nursing, chiropractic medicine, athletic training, physical therapy or orthopedic surgery.
This is the third year the Exercise Science program has been around. With the ever-changing state standards and career pathways, the KACC had to change what was previously Physical Therapy into the Exercise Science pathway. Mikesell has enjoyed the change though.
“I do enjoy teaching this pathway,” she said. “I am an athletic trainer by trade, having six years of experience in the field and I am able to teach about all of the things I do in a normal day as an athletic trainer.”
Students who are interested in learning more about the Exercise Science pathway can talk to Mikesell or their counselors for more information.
