The LadyKats basketball team had their best start under head coach Haley Peckinpaugh and their best start since the 2009-10 season. The LadyKats are 16-7 heading into the sectional tournament. This is the most wins the girls’ basketball program has earned in more than a decade. The LadyKats started the season 6-0 before falling to Zionsville and Lafayette Jeff.
“Being able to go 6-0 with my team has been such a great moment for me and my team,” said sophomore Bella Richards.
The LadyKats have their sights set on winning a sectional title.
“I can’t wait to see all of my teammates and I continue to grow and work and secure a sectional title,” said senior Ma’Kaela Drake. “A good teammate is someone who is supportive and selfless. I feel I play my best when I have a good support system behind me cheering me on.”
The team is working hard in practices to reach those goals.
“I work hard in practice and push my teammates to make us better,” said senior Regan McClain.
The bond the team has created has helped the players grow.
“My favorite part about basketball is the sense of family that comes about during the long season,” McClain said.
Junior Eliana Stewart agrees. The bond is one of her favorite parts of playing basketball.
“I feel that one of the best parts of being on a team is the relationships I have with my teammates,” she said.
All of the team’s hard work and dedication has not gone unnoticed by Peckinpaugh.
“I am very proud of this team and excited to see where the future can take us this year if we continue to buy into the plan and work hard,” she said.
The LadyKats face the McCutcheon Mavericks Friday, Feb. 7 in the first round of the sectional. Game time is 7:30pm at Harrison High School.
