Even though the season is still young, the KHS boys’ and girls’ wrestling teams have shown what passion and hard work can do. Last week, in a meet against the Marion Giants, senior Gabe Newland earned his 100th career win. The Wildkat wrestlers took down the Giants, 55-22.
The Kats have been working hard to improve this year and reach their goals.
“My goals for the year are to constantly improve and try to get some of my wrestlers to state,” said head coach Jacob Bough.
While Newland would love the chance to wrestle at state, he’s keeping his focus on each match he wrestles.
“I would love to make it to state and wrestle far, however I don’t want to limit myself to a certain goal, so I just want to go out and give my greatest performance each match,” he said. “My main goal is to strengthen my mentality and find the confidence in the work I put in outside of the meets because that’s where most of the effort and work is directed.”
The Kats finished 2nd at last weekend’s Western Invite, despite giving up three weight classes because of illnesses.
The LadyKat wrestlers also secured a victory against the Marion Giants, 57-18. The girls’ team placed 4th at the Lebanon Invite. Senior Brielle Humphries led the way for the LadyKats, winning her weight class. Sophomore Makyila Rubush and freshman Spencer Martin both claimed 3rd in their weight classes.
Humphries has her sights set on finishing an undefeated season, something she is on track to do.
“I want to become a state champion,” she said.
Senior Aubreanna Fitts is hoping to improve from last season.
“I hope this season improves my overall physical and my mental toughness,” she said. “The highlight of my season so far is getting more pins than I did last year and that has been a very exciting accomplishment.”
The LadyKats travel to Lafayette Jeff Saturday.
