The KHS robotics team, the TechnoKats, rang in 2025 in downtown Kokomo and hosted a New Year’s Eve ball drop for the first time since January 1st, 2020. They had to pause their celebrations due to the Covid-19 outbreak that forced people into isolation.
The ball drop was set up with the help of Kokomo firefighters. The TechnoKats hung the ball on one of the firetruck’s ladders and they dropped it from there.
“We finished this ball in December of 2019,” said Joy Dewing, lead mentor for the TechnoKats. “This year the students made some repairs and added new designs.”
The students made repairs to the wiring and 3D printed parts, as needed, and worked on the programming prior to the NYE celebration downtown, which allowed the city of Kokomo to see the hard work the team put into the event.
The TechnoKats have also been preparing for their upcoming competition season since August and just recently started their build-season. The team learned the new game for the season on Jan. 4 and have been busy designing and building their robot for competition.
