As we continue through the colder months of the year, prioritizing winter safety is a must. As you walk, drive or wait for the bus, keeping warm in these freezing temperatures is very important for your safety and health.
If you walk to school each morning, it is important that you make sure that you are well covered and staying warm in freezing temperatures, as it is very easy to catch a cold or any other sickness going around. Also keep in mind to have your fingers covered when being exposed to cold weather so that you don’t get frostbite in close to negative temperatures.
“It is very important to cover your head and ears because we lose body heat via the top of our head,” said Resource Officer Tammy Cody. “Cover your extremities; your hands and your feet and do your best not to get any of them wet.”
This also applies to waiting for your bus. If you ride the bus in the morning make sure you layer up to stay warm when waiting for your bus.
Cody also noted her concerns about slick conditions at bus stops.
“One of my main concerns at bus stops has always been if it’s slick outside that children are too close to the curb then cars could slide into them. It is so important to have safety at the bus stop by staying out of the street, not pushing and shoving. You can move around to keep your body warm and put some kind of barrier between you and the wind,” she said.
If you drive to school make sure you are giving yourself enough time in the morning to heat up your car and defrost your windshields before you start driving. Get all the snow off the mirrors so you make sure you have a full view of your surroundings. Drive five miles under the speed limit and push the brakes slowly to avoid sliding on the road. When walking into school from the parking lot, keep all of the prior necessities for staying warm in mind when being outside, even in a short period of time.
Winter safety is important for your health and safety. Staying warm in these cold conditions is extremely important to you and to KHS.
