As the KHS Winter Guard head into the end of February, they are spinning their way to success. February is a packed month as it is full of competitions and performances for the group. This year’s show is titled “In Your Eyes.”
At their first competition of the season at Greenwood, they left with a first place finish. They finished third last weekend, battling closely with the second place guard.
“This season has a lot of potential for everyone to get a lot better,” said senior Lydea Groves. “The show has lots of variety, which makes it very exciting.”
Senior member Keegan Irick-Holiday is also excited for this season.
“I am very nervous for this season,” he said. “My goals are to get stronger and cleaner each competition week.” His hard work will pay off each weekend when they go to different schools to compete in IHSCGA for the 24th consecutive year.
For winter guard director Deanne Wideman, the start of the season brings a lot of mixed emotions.
“The guard has great potential, but we’re still in the learning phases so feels a little stressful. It will turn out because the kids are great learners,” she said.
Because this year’s show is very fast-paced, Wideman is excited to see how the seniors step up and help lead. After finishing 6th at last year’s state finals, the winter guard has their sights set on a higher finish this year.
“My goals for this season are to make state finals and finish higher than the previous year,” Wideman said.
The winter guard will perform their 2025 show at this year’s Performing Arts Winter Showcase on Thursday, March 20.
