Senior swimmer Aubrey Simmons is no stranger to the IHSAA state finals. Simmons has competed there four years in a row. This year, she had her best finish, taking third in the 100 backstroke. She finished in 55.42 seconds and earned a medal for the second year in a row.
Simmons also earned a spot in the 50 freestyle finals, placing 13th with a time of 23.91 seconds. But this wasn’t just another meet for Simmons. It was a chance to represent the Katfish one last time.
“Leading up to state I was extremely excited to swim. This is what I have been waiting for the entire season,” she said. “Swimming against my friends who I haven’t seen in a while, making new friends and seeing how far I’ve come makes this meet special to me.”
Although her time as a Katfish has ended, Simmons will continue her swimming career at Ball State. She knows she hasn’t made it this far on her own.
“Everyone has helped me get to this point in my career,” she said. “My parents for putting me into this sport, paying the fees, making sure I am doing what is right for me in order to become better. My coaches believe in me and push me to work harder even when I am having a bad practice. And most importantly, the Wildkat community for recognizing my accomplishments and making me work harder so they will be proud me.”
