The KHS wrestling team recently sent four athletes to IHSAA Fort Wayne Semi-State; Gabe Newland, X’Avion Ford, Devon Rush and Christien Damewood competed for a spot at the state finals. While none of the wrestlers advanced, head coach Jacob Bough was proud of his team and what they accomplished this season.
“Winning the NCC Wrestling Championships for both the girls and boys team was the highlight of the season,” Bough said. He was also named NCC Boys’ and Girls’ Wrestling Coach of the Year and was He is first Wildkat coach to earn two NCC coach of the year awards in the same sports season.
Bough is hopeful that the Wildkat wrestling program will continue to grow and they will be able to improve on this year’s successes.
Newland hopes to see the wrestling tradition grow too.
“I have two little brothers who are currently in middle school and I know that they’ve got a great set of circumstances to guarantee greatness in and out of wrestling. I would love to help them in anything they need, coming into their practices and helping them at home with technique,” Newland said. “I also have a little sister who’s four years old and she’s showing an interest in wrestling too and I hope she tries it out. I’d love to see my family wrestling and grow it as a tradition.”
At the end of the day, Newland just hopes he’s made an impact.
“I’m grateful for the past six years that I’ve been able to do wrestling, and I appreciate all the support and help that I’ve received from my coaches, family, friends and everyone,” he said. “I hope I’ve made an impact in the community in and out wrestling, especially in my family.”
