The KHS boys’ volleyball team is entering its first official season as a sport recognized by the Indiana High School Athletic Association. They had their inaugural season last year and it was a start for what could turn into something really great.

Since the team is only in its second season, most of the players are still fairly new to the sport of volleyball and what it entails.

“It feels great to be a part of this newer program, especially since this is the first year that (boys) volleyball is an IHSAA sport,” said freshman Owen Downing. “It feels good to have a supportive team and make history.”

Downing isn’t the only one who is excited about being part of the program and leaving a legacy at KHS.

“I wanted to try something new and be part of something special—something that could make history and leave a legacy,” said senior Sean McCormick.

Being a part of something new isn’t the only thing special about this team. There is a lot of support and bonds being created within the team.

“I have experienced a lot of support from my team and coaches, who are helping the team and I constantly improve. Overall, everyone I’ve met this season has been very supportive and have shown great sportsmanship,” Downing said.

This connection isn’t only off the court but also changing the narrative on the court. The team experiences more teamwork because of the bond they are building. McCormick feels that it can be hard at times but that mostly benefits them overall.

“It’s intense, but every bit of the work is worth it. Everything starts to click when we come together and play as one,” he said.

The boys’ volleyball looks to get some wins this season and grow the program for the years to come. They play tomorrow in a tournament at Harrison High School.
