Girls’ tennis works to create best lineup

The girls tennis team is kicking off the season strong and working hard as most of their lineup from last year’s varsity team have graduated. They are working hard to create their best lineup for the season.

We have been doing challenge matches during practice and doing drills to help improve our skills,” said senior Sydney Colescott.

This is leading the team to success as they continue to practice hard to win matches. The weather has posed a challenge for the team though as cooler temperatures and rainy conditions have made practicing outside a little tricky.

The mental side of the game is something that many of the players have to work through on a daily basis. For senior Raigan Heflin, tennis is her escape from reality, even though being positive can be hard.

“I have had so many struggles with being mentally strong and keeping my calm during points,” she said. “One bad call or bad shot can mess up the way you approach the rest of the game.”

Playing strategically is the highlight of tennis for many players.

“My favorite part of playing tennis is that it requires a lot of strategy,” said senior Olivia Downing. “It really challenges me to think outside of the box on how to win the point.”

Head coach Sarah Hemmerich has high hopes for her team this season.

“We are looking to defend our sectional championship and compete for the NCC Championship,” she said.

Hemmerich has confidence in her team though.

“I have a great group of young ladies who are fun to be around and am blessed with outstanding help from managers and assistant coaches. We couldn’t be successful without them,” Hemmerich said.

The LadyKats’ tennis team travels to Lebanon on Monday.
