Grease is the word and it’s taking the stage in the KHS auditorium May 8 and 9 at 7pm. While this show is a big undertaking, director Randi Weeks believes this show was the right fit for the KHS drama and choir department.

We wanted something fun for our senior class.  It also needed to fit our budget, our cast of about 75, and the time availability of all the adults involved,” she said. “We also wanted it to be something the community would like and something we, as a directing team, were excited to create and produce.”

For Weeks, watching her cast encourage each other is one of her favorite parts of directing high school theatre.

I love the camaraderie that is built between the cast and directing team. Standing backstage during a show and watching others pray or encourage or cross fingers for an actor who is approaching a big note or dance move is one of my favorite moments,” Weeks said.

Junior Maddi Hodson is playing Patty Simcox, the head cheerleader at Rydell High School. Hodson loves seeing the connections she’s able to make behind-the-scenes translate to the stage.

“Even on your worst day they could make you smile,” she said. “It’s simply looking onto that stage and looking at our finished show and saying that we’re proud. That we can’t do anymore to it, this is the finished product.”

Classmate Jayten Kitts is playing Danny Zuko, the leader of the Burger Boys. This is his first lead role, though he isn’t a stranger to the stage. Kitts portrayed Prince Hans in last semester’s production of Frozen, Jr.

“Not only is Grease very popular, but our cast is absolutely amazing and everyone is doing a great job,” Kitts said. “I am looking forward to putting on a good show for everyone that attends.”

Senior Noelle Duncan agrees. She is playing the well-known Sandy in the KHS production.

“There is something in this show for everyone. Well-known songs, incredible choreography, fun costumes, great band, awesome set and much more,” she said. “It is fun for all ages.”

For Duncan, being on the stage is where she feels most comfortable.

“Theatre is my safe place, the place I feel most at home. It is a beautiful thing to step into a character’s shoes and share their story through this art form,” she said. “One thing I love about theatre is the community it brings. No matter the show, the community it creates through the process is one of the best parts. It is also incredible to be able to touch people’s lives while doing what I love.”

Senior Nora Marden, who plays Rizzo, hopes people come out to see the show and appreciate the hard work they’ve all put in.

“People should come see the show because it is a wonderful story of friendship and coming together, but it’s also a warning and lesson of staying true to yourself and not letting people change you,” she said.

The KHS drama and choir department production of Grease takes the stage in two weeks. Tickets can be purchased for $10 online at kokomohs.booktix.com or at the door the night of the show. Kids under 4 years old are free.
