With the start of a new school year comes the beginning of fall sports’ seasons. From the cross country, tennis and golf courses and to the volleyball court and the football and soccer fields, KHS athletes are working hard this season.
Football
With a new head coach, the KHS football team is ready to take on a new season. After falling in their first game to defending state champion New Palestine, the players are ready to bounce back for this weekend’s matchup.
“Our team goal is to just get better and win the ‘ship,” said senior captain Brandon Humphries.
The football team worked throughout the spring and summer to get ready to compete.
“We have all been working really hard this off-season in the weight room and conditioning to prepare for this upcoming season,” said senior Ryan Gilliam.
The Kats take on Terre Haute South tonight at 7pm at Walter Cross Field.
Volleyball
Heading into this season, the VolleyKats have a young team ready to compete. They have three strong leaders ready to lead this team to greatness and continue the Wildkat legacy.
“My personal goal is to show my leadership as a senior on this team and continue on the legacy,” said senior Tia Williams .
Senior Torre Willis hopes to encourage her teammates during practices and games
“Throughout this long season it’s important to keep the team motivated and make sure my teammates are resting so we can be ready for games ahead,” she said.
Next up for the VolleyKats is an away match against Elwood on Tuesday.
Cross Country
The cross country teams have been working hard to improve and be ready to compete in the post-season.
“We plan on making it to regional after falling one spot short last season,” said senior Morgan Rakestraw.
Senior Ethan Lytle is a leader for the boys’ cross country team. He likes the way the team is progressing and feels like they are in good shape.
“We have a solid team right now. We’re at our best and we really want to win,” he said.
The KHS cross country team competes at the Taylor University Invitational tomorrow.
Boys Tennis
The KHS boys’ tennis team has their sights set on winning a sectional championship.
“We are going to work really hard to make it to the goal we have set as a team,” said senior Caleb Taflinger.
With a strong returning lineup, the Kats look ready to take on their opponents and bring home a title. The Kats travel to Richmond tomorrow for a double-header against the Richmond Red Devils and the Marion Giants.
Girls’ Golf
With a team comprised of mostly sophomore golfers, the KHS girls’ golf team is off to a strong start. Senior Mariah Edington hopes to provide some leadership for her younger teammates.
“This season I hope to add in leadership for team bonding since we have a whole new team this season so we can get to know each other more,” she said.
The LadyKat golfers travel to the Rochester Invite tomorrow.
Boys’ Soccer
After a strong showing last season, the Wildkat boys’ soccer team is looking to build on their successes. They’ve got their eyes on a conference title and a sectional title.
“I’m most looking forward to winning this squad,” said senior Alan Lopez.
Senior Adrian Reyes agrees and is looking forward to hanging out with his teammates and playing the sport they’re all passionate about.
The boys’ soccer team faces Oak Hill in an away match at 12:30pm tomorrow.
Girls’ Soccer
The LadyKat soccer team is working hard to encourage each other and have fun together as they head into the season.
“Not everyone will score goals or run as fast as others, but our focus should be on having fun and cherishing the friendships we’ve built along the way,” said senior Jackie Cuatlacuatl.
Cuatlacuatl also believes the fans in the stands can really help the team during a tough game.
“Seeing our supporters is incredibly special to me,” she said. “When my teammates and I are on the field, their encouraging words really stand out and motivate us to give our best.”
The LadyKats travel to Lafayette Jeff on Tuesday. Game time is 7pm.
