The KHS girls’ golf team held the sectional trophy for the first time in seven years last week. The girls’ finished 12 strokes ahead of their competition, qualifying for tomorrow’s regional at Battle Ground.
Head coach Mariah Horner has been working with the team throughout the season to improve and achieve their goals. Horner has emphasized the importance of strategic play as well.
“Our goals are to work on the game daily and analyze the round played to see where strokes could have been cut,” Horner said. “We also began analyzing courses and playing smart golf, considering factors like water, elevated greens, wind speed and creeks.”
Leading up to the sectional match, the golf team placed third at the North Central Conference match. Horner is proud of the progress the team has made this year.
“We have broken 200 several times at both home and away matches, and our positions and scores in 18-hole tournaments have continued to improve,” she said.
Winning the sectional was a highlight of the season for sophomore Averie Stiner, especially since the team was not expected to advance to the regional.
“My favorite memory from this season is winning sectionals,” Stiner said. “At sectional I had my best 18 hole score, and the rest of my team played great! It was a huge accomplishment, and after we all went out to eat.”
Stiner is preparing for the regional by traveling to the regional golf course to practice and get a feel for the course. The LadyKat golf team travels to Battle Ground for the regional match tomorrow.
