Show choir competes in person

Show choir had its first live competition since 2020 just a couple weeks ago. Because of Covid, the choir was unable to compete. This caused many people to lose interest, resulting in a smaller choir.

“Covid really hurt the performing arts,” said choir director Cherresa Lawson. The choir was able to perform in-person for the first time last spring. The performance had to be held at the softball stadium because of social distancing guidelines.

This year’s competition group consists of four juniors, nine sophomores and five freshmen, which is a relatively small group. In previous years, there have been anywhere from 26 to 42 performers. Despite their size, the KHS show choir placed 3rd at their first performance.

“None of the members of Choraliers (the competitive Show Choir) have every competed in Show Choir. This was an “eye opening” experience for them. They have come such a long way and I am so proud of them,” Lawson said.

This year’s show does not have a theme, but it does include a variety of musical styles.

“We open with the song “Faith” from the movie Sing. Our second tune is “Moondance” by Van Morrison, the Ballad is “The Song of Purple Summer” from the musical Spring Awakening, “If I Could Turn Back Time” by Cher and “Feel the Love/Make Me Lose Control” by Eric Carmen,” Lawson said.

Kiara Koon is a junior and this year is her second year being a member of show choir. Last year, she didn’t get to perform, so competing is something she has been looking forward to.

“It was a little nerve wracking because I had never competed before, but I’m gonna miss it when this season ends,” she said. Her favorite song from the show is “The Song of Purple Summer.

Morgan McCloud is also a junior, but this is her first year in show choir. McCloud joined for the experience, but singing and dancing at the same time is not as easy as she thought.

“I just wanted to try it and I actually ended up liking it.” Her favorite song from the show is “Make Me Lose Control.”

The show choir will perform at the Winter Showcase next Thursday, March 24 at 6:30pm. The showcase will be at Memorial Gym.
