Unified track team off and running

Unified track is a sport that teams up students with and without intellectual and physical disabilities. The teams consist of an equal number of both parties. In unified track, only four individuals from each team can score per event. Unified track contains exhibition flights and heats, unlike typical track, which gives everyone an opportunity to compete regardless of scoring.

“People new tend to be unsure of how competitive it is until they’re in and competing,” said head coach Mike Wilson. Wilson focuses on the importance of hard work, sportsmanship and supporting each other as a team throughout the season.

This year’s team has about 40 members, many of whom are brand new to the sport.

The unified track team does not have any home events this season, but they compete at the Western Invite on Wednesday. If the team qualifies for the regional competition, they will compete at KHS on Saturday, May 28.
