Spring sports get ready to compete

Tearria Coatie and Jada Williams

When the weather begins to warm up, it’s time for the KHS spring sports athletes to head outside to compete. Most of the sports teams have started workouts in preparation for their seasons, but there are still opportunities for students to join if they are interested.

Softball
The KHS softball team has been hosting workouts every Monday and Wednesday evening. The team will start official practices on Monday, March 6. Students who are interested in joining the team must do so before the first day of try-outs. See head coach Mike Susong with any questions.

Baseball
Baseball workouts are currently happening on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 7pm in the Haworth Gym. Workouts are open to any student who wants to participate. The final team rosters will be posted after try-outs, held on March 13 and 14. Official practices start March 15 and the first varsity game is April 4.

Girls’ Tennis
Girls’ tennis season officially starts March 13. That is the last day students can join the team. During the season, the team will practice daily, but right now, they have workouts Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:45 to 4:15pm. Girls who are interested in joining the tennis team can contact head coach Sarah Hemmerich for more information.

Boys’ Golf
While the boys’ golf team has already had their season call-out meeting, boys who are interested in golfing can still join the team. The golf season begins on Monday, March 13. Contact Matt York for more information.

Unified Track
The Unified Track team will begin practicing on Monday, March 6 from 2:30 to 3:45pm. They practice on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The season starts after Spring Break, so students in other sports can finish their seasons before joining. The first meet is Saturday, April 22. Athletes need to have at least 10 practices in before the first meet.

Girls’ Track
Even though girls’ track practices have already started, head coach John Malone accepts latecomers. The team is still looking for girls who want to run or compete in field events like high jump, long jump, shotput and discus. The team has their first indoor track meet today at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion.

Boys’ Track
The boys’ track team practices Monday-Friday until about 4pm. Boys who are interested in running track or competing in field events should meet at Door 13 (the gym doors), dressed and ready to start practice. They will compete in an indoor track meet today at Indiana Wesleyan University. Contact head coach Zenova Williams if you have any questions.
