LadyKats start season with a bang

The LadyKats tennis team is off to a fantastic start at the beginning of their season. So far the Kats have only lost one match and have a record of 5-1, only losing to Harrison. The team is coached by Sarah Hemmerich and Brett Heflin. These two coaches have been able to push their players to higher limits which has paid off.

Senior Mia Federspill plays #1 doubles and will attend Indiana University Kokomo to continue her academic and athletic career.

“So far I am feeling super excited about this season,” she said. “Our goal this season is to win sectionals. For the past two years, we have been unable to close matches during sectionals, and I believe this year we can do it.”

Senior captain Ellen Callane has been a four year varsity member and is the number two singles player this year.

“I am feeling really confident. We had a lot of returning varsity players, and the newer varsity members have been playing well,” Callane said.

She agreed that the team goal is to not only win sectionals, but also grow closer as a team, and create stronger bonds.

“My personal goal this season is to improve my mental game,” she said. “Tennis can be one of the most challenging mind games so it is really important to stay positive during a match.”

One of Callane’s favorite memories of playing tennis at KHS was winning her match against Northwestern during sectionals, after losing that same match during the regular season.

As the Ladykats girls’ tennis team looks to extend their winning streak deep into the season, they are also creating connections with each other and forming a family.

The girls’ team will continue to compete until May 15, which begins their sectional run for the hardware. The team will host senior night May 8 when they battle Madison-Grant at the KHS tennis courts.
