Carrie Potter is the 2025 recipient of the Lilly Scholarship. Despite the numerous applicants, Potter was selected as KHS’s representative.
“I was actually pretty surprised when I was told it was me. I was extremely grateful for such an opportunity that it took me a bit to realize it was for real,” she said.
There are many attributes the selection committee looks at in a scholarship winner, and Potter believes it was her motivation that helped her.
“I believe that I have a very strong motivation and “why” for what I want to do in life. I think anyone wishing to apply in the future needs to think about that heavily. My ability to have my beliefs carry through my essay and also my interview most likely allowed for others to understand my dedication and also stand out,” she said.
Paying for college can be a very stressful thing as not everyone gets the help they need. The Lilly Scholarship helps cover a lot of those costs.
“Due to the large amount of costs that this scholarship covers, I’ll stay in Indiana for school to make the most use of it. Being able to have both tuition and book costs covered, I should be able to work and fully pay for college debt free.”
The Lilly Scholarship is a great way for Potter to be able to continue her education at the school of her choice without having to worry about getting loans. The scholarship is offered to seniors every year, so Potter offered this advice to future applicants.
“Don’t procrastinate! I personally procrastinate all the time, but for this scholarship I worked really hard not to,” she said. “When writing your essay, you really need to think about it and have a strong “why” and plan out what you’ll write with plenty of time to spare. I think having a strong essay was important for all who were finalists this year.”
Potter plans to study biology with a pre-med track after graduation.
